Last year I really tried cooking. Perhaps my favorite discovery was Korean cuisine, which a close friend introduced me to. Full of healthy foods like kimchi, Korean cuisine is bursting with flavor. In an attempt to make Korean food myself, I ordered a can of organic gochujang (Korean red pepper flakes). As I approached the middle of the box, I realized to my horror that it was lumpy and disgusting.

It may not be obvious to everyone, but the kitchen is often the most humid place in the house. When something is cooked or boiled, moisture is released into the air.. This humidity can be beneficial for any herbs you keep in your kitchen, but it’s a different story when it comes to dried spices. If you find clumps of spices and sugar, humidity is the culprit.
So what can you do about it? The last thing you want to do is move your spice cabinet to where you need it most. This may surprise you, but one of the best ways is to use silica gel packs. You know those bags that say “DO NOT EAT”? These wraps are my favorite way to keep seasonings from sticking together and are also great for wrapping potatoes and other vegetables to sprout.
These bags contain everything from dried seaweed to shoes and bags. Like spices, silica gel prevents moisture from destroying these foods. But is there any reason to worry about silica gel?
Warning labels can be concerning, but it’s good to know what silica gel is. Silica gel or silica is the same as sand. Think about what would happen if you poured water into a sandcastle. It absorbs the environment like silica gel. There are warning signs indicating a choking hazard for children. You don’t have to worry about getting sick because it’s not toxic!
Instead of throwing them away, why not keep a few on hand? Just throw it in a jar or cover it and it will transform your herbs and spices. If you find that the effectiveness of your backpacks is decreasing, you can bake some silicone in the oven (remember to remove it from the paper packaging) and refill!
